Project in development: Inclusion of values by the Brazilian public libraries.

ABSTRACT

Libraries in Brazil exist in various types, designed by the purposes for which they are made depending on the context and the socio-political contingency, especially when we situate the advent of democracy in the country. However, compared with other countries whose democratization process similar to the Brazil, focused libraries or organized to record and safeguard the culture and the memory of the black man, indigenous, gypsy, LGBT etc. are nonexistent, depending for their livelihoods exercise of cultural centers from NGOs. Exceptionally, some entities can keep libraries for these humanitarian groups at the expense of donations and volunteer work of its members. This is the case of the Bahia Gay Group maintains collections that record the memory of the LGBT movement and also produces statistical reports on LGBT violence in Brazil. Another example is the Gypsy Embassy of Brazil that keeps on its website access to information and news about the movement and its library records and safeguards the memory of the Roma people in Brazil. When it is said that they do not exist, it is said that there are under the State's point of view for libraries whose policies do not reach these populations and communities. In fact, policies for libraries in Brazil still are weak, absent, silent, not to say, incompetent. Why democracy on the one hand, it is a burden that politicians and governments apply to cover the diversity of vested interests and the people on the other hand does not know what that means. Republic does not join and governors that govern for few are some causes of the lack of consistency for public policies for libraries. In this sense, the notion of libraries for all in Brazil or is in the process of being carried out or is it a utopia? Under this approach, we study inclusion values by public libraries for distinct communities in Brazil, such as, gypsies, quilombos African descent, indigenous and LGBT citizens. This aims to identify how much libraries exist, where they are and what they do to keep their cultural memory preserved.
